The Toughest Jobs in the 3rd Region. GIRLS EDITION

3rd Region Hoops — Girls Hoops in the 3rd Region is as good as it’s been in years. We’re fortunate to still have the Legendary Mike Harper roaming the Muhlenberg County sidelines, we have seen many success stories involving both players & coaches through the years and there is arguably as much parody as there has been in sometime. In the Early 2000’s it was Brad Johnson’s Ohio County Lady Eagles and aforementioned Mike Harper’s Lady Stars of Muhlenberg North VS the field. Yes, Owensboro Catholic & HC Michael Robertson have been the standard for the past 11 seasons, but we’ve seen others raise the bar and build winning cultures and programs. Recently you read the 3rd Region Hoops Toughest Jobs In The Region on the boys side, now let’s dive into the other side of the isle.. THE TOUGHEST JOBS IN THE REGION – GIRLS EDITION

  • OHIO COUNTY- There was a time not too long ago, that Ohio County was a hot bed for talent, after all, Hartford is home to 10 Regional Championships on the girls side.. You had ladies like Mariah Robinson, Erin Adams, Julie Leach, Ariel Keown & so many more who each took turns handling the 3rd Region. The Lady Eagles, under Brad Johnson had as impressive of a thing going as anyone NOT named Mike Harper & Muhlenberg North. There is a familiar face walking the sidelines for Ohio County by the name of Ted Hill. Hill was a long time assistant to Johnson and is the most recent coach to win a regional title for the Lady Eagles. Living in the shadows of consistent success has darkened the times in Hartford though. The caliber of talent isn’t the same and as a result the success hasn’t been there at the level the folks of Ohio County grew accustomed too. Despite the dip in talent over the last several years, Ohio County is STILL passionate. The fan base’s “craziness” doesn’t stop with the Boys program, it bleeds VERY heavily into the girls program. As you know, that place LOVES ITS BASKETBALL & expects to compete at a high level. Ted Hill has put his chips into developing a younger core of ladies in efforts to build some sort of consistency again. It’s hard to argue any other job in girls basketball being harder than the Ohio County job.
  • MUHLENBERG COUNTY- Mike Harper set the bar HIGHHHHH! He’s won 9 regional titles with the most recent being in 2015. Harper has done more than enough to be given a pass for the recent drop off in success.. to an extent.. BUT make no mistake about it, The fan base is as spoiled as any fan base in the region and the expectations are still through the roof. Muhlenberg County has more regional titles (12) than anyone else in the region and after struggling for a couple seasons, the Lady Mustangs had a solid season in 22/23, winning a 10th District Title & got back to its winning ways. Like Ohio County, the folks of Muhlenberg County bleeds basketball like few in the region & the passion is unmatched. Harper helped himself with the dominance, but the standard set has kinda hurt him as of late. ITS WIN OR FAILURE IN GREENVILLE.
  • GRAYSON COUNTY- Want to know what Grayson County has in common with Ohio County, both Ted Hill & Brad Johnson roamed the sidelines of Grayson County. With as much talk about the passionate fan bases of Owensboro, Muhlenberg County & Ohio County, Grayson County isn’t far behind them. They love their basketball & the expectations are ALWAYS compete, contend & WIN! It’s been bit of a rebuild over the last few seasons for the Lady Cougars but the improvement has been there and there is great momentum around the program. It’s a great place when the wins are coming, but when the loses pile up, what a miserable place to be. The Litchfield Aquatic Center can only help ease the pain a few months out of the year. Grayson County is a hard place to coach. Point blank period.
  • APOLLO- Apollo is BASKETBALL. Girls and Boys. The fan base is crazy, like the other fan bases mentioned in this write up and a lot of the time, the expectations have set coaches up for Failure. But those expectations didn’t come out of nowhere., the E-Gals have won 7 regional championships & Natalie Payne, Jason Powers and Willis McClure have shown how great that place is when it’s clicking. Those 3 have long established themselves as Apollo Royalty when it comes to girls basketball. As we mentioned, APOLLO IS BASKETBALL, so whether it be boys or girls, it’s without question, ONE OF THE TOUGHEST JOBS IN THE REGION.
