3rd Region Hoops — With many of our 3rd Region Hoops Student Athletes playing softball, baseball & travel basketball starting to really pick up, we decided to think way ahead to next season. Yes that’s right, the 22/23 Hoops season JUST ended, but we are already excited and anticipating next season. There was a lot of really talented kids throughout the region this season but next season could provide even more talent. The 22/23 season saw Owensboro Catholic Senior Point Guard Brian Griffith win the 3rd Region Player of the Year award by the Owensboro Messenger Inquirer, 3rd Region Hoops Media Outlet & more. Butler County’s super sophomore Ty Price was ESPN Owensboro’s 3rd Region Player of the Year. On the Girls side, Meade County Sophomore Combo Guard Peyton Bradley was unanimous 3rd Region Player of The Year. Each player was VERY deserving of the awards & have spectacular seasons. Now, let’s get a little ahead of ourselves and maybe even a bit “ridiculous” and make some predictions for both GIRLS & BOYS favorites to win the 3rd Region Player of The Year next season, shall we? First, let’s look at the GIRLS side;
- Peyton Bradley (Meade County) 22ppg 5rpg “her last outing in a Meade County uniform saw her shoot an abysmal 2-16 from the field in there 54-49 stunning loss to eventual region champ Owensboro Catholic. Look for an extremely motivated junior campaign for the reigning player of the year. This kid is a special talent and D1 Offers will begin to roll into Brandenburg at any moment.”
- ALyrica Hughes (Owensboro) 13ppg 7rpg “Hughes put together a very solid junior season for the VASTLY improved Lady Red Devils. Hughes was one of the top defensive talents in the area and has the ability to take over a game in a variety of ways. She will go into next season with high expectations and will look to show the region that this seasons OHS team wasn’t a one hit wonder.”
- Caroline Lucas (Breckinridge County) 17ppg 5rpg “Lucas was the motor that made the Lady Tigers go this season and has the ability to take over a game on both ends of the floor. She led the Lady Tigers in scoring en route to a 25 win season for HC Chad Moorman. She was voted to the All Region Team by all Media Outlets who cover the area. Expect a big summer and senior campaign.”
- Brooklyn Stewart (Muhlenberg County) 19ppg 9rpg “Stewart provides tremendous length & above average athleticism that enables her to play multiple positions on offense and guard all 5 positions at times on the defensive end. She has the ability to stretch the floor and puts points on the board in a hurry. She led Muhlenberg in scoring and rebounds and was a MAJOR piece of the puzzle that helped guide the Lady Mustangs from 10 wins in 21/22 to a 19-11 finish in 22/23. Not only did Stewart put up great point totals, she done so in a somewhat efficient manner, shooting 46% from the field. She will go into her senior season with a target on her back from every opposing coach Muhlenberg faces.”
- Hailee Johnson (Owensboro Catholic) 12ppg 4rpg “Johnson, since arriving on Parish Avenue has been a consistent winner for HC Michael Robertson. She joined the 1,000 point club this season, for a Lady Aces Program that has seen it’s fair share of talent. Johnson does a little bit of everything for her ball club and has great shot making abilities & ability to be an elite defender. Johnson was named to the ALL REGION Team by every Media Outlet covering the region and will be expected to lead the charge for the Lady Aces as they look to defend their regional championship trophy.”
