Brownsville KY— Edmonson County Senior Braxton Highbaugh quietly put together one of more impressive senior campaigns of anyone in the 3rd Region. The 6’3 senior guard led the Wildcats in scoring at 14 ppg, Rebounding at 8 rpg & was second on the team in assists at 5 apg. Highbaugh had the ability to put up big numbers across the stat sheet for The 12th District Wildcats! Highbaugh spent 2 seasons in Brownsville after transferring in from Bowling Green High School ahead of his junior year. In his 2 seasons for Head Coach Brad Johnson, Highbaugh amassed 640 points, 370 rebounds and 325 assists. This season, Highbaugh was named to the 2023 3rd Region Hoops ALL 12th District Team & the 12th District ALL Tournament Team. During the 12th District Tournament Highbaugh was playing as well as anyone in the area and put together a tournament that included; 12th District Champs & saw him average nearly a triple double; averaging 22 points per game, 12 Rebounds and 9 assists. Highbaugh fits the mold of a complete basketball player and has been coached by one of the best & most successful coaches in western Kentucky in Brad Johnson. We asked the Head Coach what it’s been like and what Highbaugh meant to the program and he said the following; “
Braxton more than any player I have ever coached was fearless. He wasn’t afraid of anyone or any situation. Ultimate competitor and confidence in himself. I think his confidence rubbed off on his teammates. In the district tournament I think we were playing as well as anyone. I think he had 20,10, and 10 in 1 game. He played 1-5 on offense and defense and never shied away from any challenge. He practiced hard everyday, made everyone around him better and lifted the level of each practice and game.” Now that Braxtons High School career is finished, he will spend the days ahead contemplating on where he will play at the next level. Highbaugh has received 4 college offers and more are likely to come but Braxton says “I’m not sure when a decision will be made.” When it comes to what will play into his decision process and choosing which school to commit too, Highbaugh says he will commit to the school that gives him the same style of coaching as he has received during his tenure in Brownsville. When asked about his time in an Edmonson County uniform, Highbaugh says it’s something he wanted to do for a long time but it “didn’t work out like I wanted it to until junior year.” Highbaugh says the program “really is a family” and he loved playing with his brothers. When asked about Coach Johnson, Highbaugh labeled the boss as “the coach I never knew I needed & never knew they’d be so close.” Braxton stressed to us how appreciative of Coach Johnson for “taking a chance on me, trusting me and pushing me and my teammates everyday to be the best people we can be. I’ll always be thankful for what he’s meant to me.” In just 2 short years in Brownsville, Braxton Highbaugh certainly left his mark on the program. Over the next few weeks, Highbaugh will attend several camps, and plans to take a few more visits before sitting down with his family to make the final decision on where he’ll play at the next level. A great kid, with a ton of potential & whoever ends up sealing a commitment from Highbaugh will be getting a player who’s best basketball is ahead him. He has just touched the surface on how good he can be.
