Bowling Green KY— The 4th Region is known around the state of Kentucky as one of the more respectable regions when it comes to high school basketball. There has been no shortage of talent & championship level teams to represent the region at the highest of levels in the KHSAA. When it comes to GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL, the 4th Region has went through Bowling Green High School and Head Coach Calvin Head. Coach Head has been at the helm of the Lady Purples for 6 seasons and it has been a run that has been nothing short of GREATNESS. This season the Lady Purples made history, winning their 4th consecutive 4th Region Title, marking a run that has never been done before in the region. Coach Head must be regarded as one of the better coaches in Western Kentucky and if you don’t have him on your list, you’re simply residing under a rock. In 6 season at Bowling Green, Coach Head has conducted an overall record of 146-57. The Lady Purples have won 5 Region Championships & 5 straight District Championships. The Lady Purples record VS district is an incredible 54-4 and against 4th Region opponents, 93-10. Here’s another remarkable stat for you., this dominant run & tenure through the 4th Region has been accomplished without having a Lady Purple lead the region in scoring in ANY of those seasons. Yes, you read that correctly. This stretch of success according to Coach Head has been built upon three simple building blocks – 1. Compete. 2. Be Coachable. 3. Celebrate Your Teammates. These 3 things have led to a TEAM FIRST mindset that has enabled the program to see the achievements it has over the past 6 seasons. Bowling Green High School is highly respected for its athletics across the bluegrass with several state championships in multiple sports through the years. Coach Head feels very fortunate to be at Bowling Green, stating “it’s a blessing to have the opportunity to be the coach at a place like this. The standards are set extremely high and we push our girls in the program to meet and exceed those expectations.” The aforementioned principles (compete, be coachable & celebrate your teammates) has been drilled into the heads of every player to come through the program, and let’s face it, there has been an onslaught of talent come through The doors. Coach head says “we have been blessed with amazing young ladies who have been willing to buy in to our principles and these girls have been willing to sacrifice big time stat lines for team wins.” That is why the Lady Purples have experienced the accolades as a program, that it has. Coach Head has seen a handful of student athletes go on to play collegiately; Keely Morrow (class of 2018) Talla Brown (Class of 2019) LynKaylah James (class of 2022) Meadow Tisdale (class of 2023, committed to Northern Kentucky Univ.) and Saniyah Shelton (class of 2023 committed to Eastern Kentucky Univ.) He expresses though, that every girl who’s been a part of the program, has played a pivotal role in making the program what it is today. Coach Head also coaches AAU Basketball for the Prestigious Kentucky Premier program which participates in the NIKE EYBL circuit. There is no denying the pure dominance the Lady Purples have bestowed upon teams over the last 6 seasons & the trend doesn’t seem to be slowing down. It’s fair to say that Bowling Green is THE STANDARD in the 4th Region and Coach Calvin Head is THAT GUY!
